I met Steve Berg at an event in New York City introducing the new and vastly improved Firefly 2 for an enthusiastic crowd of journalists. I had only a few minutes to introduce myself and then to attempt to explain to Steve that his first foray into the vaporizer market was less than successful in my view. I tried to say, at least in a kind way that the first incarnation was not my favorite product. But after trying the new Firefly 2 with numerous improvements, my opinion of the first device was quickly forgotten. The Firefly 2 is now one of my favorite implements for the safe and metered consumption of medical cannabis. Sure you can use it for recreational weed, but to fully appreciate the expertise and talent that went into the development and implementation of this device, you should be using the finest medical cannabis available. Why? Because medical cannabis is not street weed. It has been tested for safety and it will truly, do no harm. Can your street weed say that? Doubtful. Steve’s a good guy, with a wry sense of humor. I discovered much when I sat with him and I didn’t know what to expect from my Q&A. What is written here is highly personal and very deep. I’m proud to bring you, Steve Berg. I love Kurvana. This is especially surprising in an age where nothing should make me look twice. Kurvana was one of the first cannabis oil 510 cartridges that made me come back for seconds. It’s that good. And there is that little extra bit of flavor that I can still taste when I read their website. That would be my quote: A Marvel of Science and Nature.
Brian and I have much in common. His legacy is in the Motion Pictures industry as is my own. His grandfather was an industry legend, as was mine, whereas his grandfather was liked, mine was a difficult person, well proven with the David Begelman scandal still resonating in motion picture infamy. His grandfather was on the production side of the industry (William Morris Agency), whereas mine was more the business side (New York) of the movie biz. (Vice-Chairman of the board of Columbia Pictures) We have much in common with families and the stigmas surrounding cannabis, leading to our connection in cannabis journalism. I think what Brian is doing deserves a second look with his intellectually stimulating publication leading the way in cannabis news.
I’ve traveled out to see Canndescent near Palm Springs, California when they were still a pretty small company. They had some really big dreams and were well on their way to deep success when last I touched base. I’d read that they had secured some massive funding and they were ramping up production to satisfy the need for truly elegant, top-of-the-house cannabis. Fast forward to present day. Canndescent is a market leader in the niche of craft cannabis and with legalization moving eastward and new markets opening, the world of legal cannabis doesn’t seem like such a small place any longer. Canndescent is growing organically and the legal cannabis market is finding out that quality and quantity are no longer misnomers. They mean the top end of the world, that rare place where quality translates into profit!
Cannabis-infused drinks aren’t legal yet, but that doesn’t mean would-be purchasers shouldn’t be prepared. Here’s what four experts have to say in anticipation of the cannabis cocktail quaffing expected in just a few short months.
Now that Canada is legalizing cannabis beverages, the iterations of alcohol-free drinks containing cannabis are manifesting, quickly. Cannabis cocktails are less odoriferous than smoking a joint and can be dressed up to look just like an alcoholic cocktail, making them a refreshing option for social occasions.
The GrowthOp asked a few experts to weigh in on why they believe consumers will be clamouring to try the new bevvies once they become available to Canadian adults, expected this December.
Forget horses; let’s talk cocktails. “Cannabis cocktails raise the bar on flavour. The language of cocktails is one of excellence, so what we’re looking for with making cannabis beverages is to create flavours and combine flavours that we are unaccustomed to, but that intrigue us.” As a mixologist specializing in craft spirits, Bobrow likes to combine cannabis with low-alcohol spirits, such as vermouth, to create what he calls “lo-fi” cocktails for private clients and at private parties.
The new regulations for cannabis drinkables forbid alcohol to be added to beverages in Canada, but that doesn’t mean cocktail lovers are barred from experimenting with the two substances at home.
“We know about different cultivars and different strains,” says Bobrow, “but when it’s combined with either craft spirits or in a mocktail situation, it brings flavour to a new place where it hasn’t been before, and that’s intriguing,” he adds.
Bobrow also mentions that while a cannabis edible has a delay of up to two hours, someone drinking a cannabis beverage could feel the effect much faster compared to other consumption methods, putting cannabis cocktails more on–par with their alcoholic counterparts.

I met Arend over lunch in NYC recently and within a few minutes I realized the difference between the media moguls of the past and the new leaders of the present. Arend is one of those new leaders. He is confident yet humble in his soft-spoken, gentle manner. I found him to be engaging and crisp. He speaks with a smile and he is well known and liked within the tribe. He’s on to something that is very modern, very cool indeed. His style is forthright, humorous and well punctuated by thought. He’s precisely the kind of entrepreneur who would dream in color, yet is well grounded in pragmatic reality. He knows where he is from and how tough it was to get here. I’m a fanatic for museum quality art glass. The kind that begs conversation over glasses of Barolo wine, caked with sediment from years resting in the cellar. Take me to Venice and turn me loose in the historic glass factories in Murano. They have been hand-blowing fine art glass for hundreds of years in Venice, Italy. I see much symmetry in the highest quality glass designed for the cannabis industry as in the very rare hand-blown, Murano glass. The colors may be a bit different from piece to piece in cannabis glass design, but insofar as the curves and bends of the glass, the new styles of glassware for cannabis rigs mimic the fine glass art that I’ve seen in Italy. Do you think today’s glass blowers studied with the old masters in Italy? I wouldn’t doubt that they’d consider my compliment of their craft, one of the “highest” honors. The Beta Glass Rigs that I was sent for review are as intriguing, in my view, as a several-hundred-year-old Murano glass chandelier.
