In 2015, I traveled to Moscow, Russia, with the honor of teaching a Master Class in Rum at the Moscow Bar Show (Yes, I do have a rather inglorious past in traditional liquor as a Master Mixologist/Brand Ambassador). I was stunned to learn that consuming coffee and the culture that surrounds it is a new thing in Moscow, certainly within the past five or so years with the explosion of global coffee culture. Almost overnight, coffee has been embraced by the youth of the country. The Russians appear to enjoy their coffee extremely sweet with added sugar for good luck. Just like we do in America. They love it with a couple dozen donuts on the side, as well. They ask for it by name: “Light and Sweet” — not a bad way to open a conversation in Russia through the stomach-filling kindness of Dunkin’ Donuts. On nearly every street corner, in kiosks on the street and even in private offices, there are a myriad of Dunkin’ Donuts shops. I was charmed to find out that the culture of Dunkin’ is quite popular in Moscow and if that doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what will. It’s just a little bit of home on the other side of the earth! So why am I talking about coffee and donuts?

I’ve enjoyed the good fortune to have shared time at the dinner table with Andrew Mack, the gracious and humble owner of Project Make & OLO. We spent a lovely several hours drinking some pretty serious wines along with some well matched “Country Cuisine” from the restaurant named simply, Lazy Bear in San Francisco. Andrew is humble about his many achievements with an easy smile and a kind voice. He may be from the Big City (New York) but he speaks patiently offering tidbits of what he is thinking of working on next, without saying too much. There is much going on in Andrew’s brain, he is an entrepreneur and a dreamer of big things. Aren’t they similar? No, not at all. Andrew thinks in crisp metrics and dreams in possibilities. How could I come completely across the country to visit the world famous, Hall of Flowers and not bump into Steven, one of the enlightened brothers from Brotherly Love Cannabis? It was inevitable that I would have this opportunity. My time to discover new sources for articles here was understandably short. I really wasn’t there for my own edification, although that magic couldn’t help but take place, it’s irresistible to be surrounded by flowers, flowers and more flowers. It was a few lush spring days in the verdant mountains of Occidental, California. Surrounded by ancient redwood trees, I’d always wanted to walk into the redwood forest, it’s dark in there, full of life and possibilities. They feed you with ambition in their long decay. Staying here, in this place of introspective reflection put me into the mind-space to be able to recognize authentic East Coast people, just by the way they move in a crowd. Maybe it was their T-Shirts?

To experience terroir, quite simply known in wine terms as the taste of a specific place as it applies to Humboldt County, California makes perfect sense. In my travels up and down the West Coast of California and stretching from Oregon to Nevada and Washington State to the far reaches of Maine, Massachusetts and down to Rhode Island, each appellation has it’s own personality. Cannabis, like wine possesses very specific notes, also known as terpenes. Visiting one of the largest indoor grows of cannabis in the USA is terribly humbling to say the very least. There are what we call Seven Wonders of the Earth, but whatever greatness is described as the Natural Wonders, I have to say without any hesitation that the vast, three-hundred, thousand sq. ft. indoor growing space at the Pharm, is without a doubt the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen in my life. It was absolutely stunning. And, in reverence to the universe, the entire indoor space is lit by the sun. Each intensely lit day, offering medicine to the plants, and then in turn to consumers. I would also without any hesitation like to be on record, describing myself as cannabis snob. (A burden, I know!) That would mean that I’m probably not known to scoff at cannabis, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve enjoyed the intrinsic experience of smoking really fine cannabis. This would be, in simple terms, getting a buzz, even feeling something. Nothing wrong with that at all. Not to dismiss my New Jersey medical cannabis providers who do a very nice job with the rules as they are in New Jersey. Or the multitude of fantastic micro-craft growers who have tantalized my intellectualism and my verbosity with their hand nurtured wares. All are remarkable because it’s so very hard to be completely objective in this space. It’s not like wine where you can buy it on every corner, and then again it’s exactly like wine, if you live in Arizona.

Technology certainly has taken the lead in the cannabis world with faster, stronger and better moving forward and the ‘old fashioned’ methods (the ones that I’m more familiar with), of enjoying cannabis being left in the dustbin of history. The old days of struggling to roll a joint to take your expensive medicine are the vestiges of time gone past. The very thought of emitting a deep cough from the sometimes-harsh cannabis smoke is uncomfortable on your throat. “High” Technology in cannabis makes taking a hit less onerous and stressful on the lungs, all the while enjoying the flavors and the textures of the concentrated cannabis vapors. I’ve been playing around with expensive technology and these are some standouts in the world of wonderful, cannabis gifts for the person who, has it all, or just wants the very best. Money is no object in most cases! I have included in my list a couple of non-technology items, just because I thought they are worthwhile and well thought out.
